From inventors to
eco-friendly builders
Established in 1695, Tiffin’s legacy began with the invention of a successful compound to eliminate bed bugs, leading to a thriving business and royal patronage.
Over the centuries, the company expanded its services to include timber treatment in the 1930s, dry and wet rot treatment in the 1940s, and damp proofing skills in the 1950s. In 1965 and 1974, Tiffin acquired two long-established building companies, enabling a complete building and general property care service alongside its traditional preservation skills.
Evolution to Eco Tiffin
Robert Tiffin, a Quantity Surveyor, took over the family business, embracing modern building demands while focusing on core expertise. Recognising the changing needs of buildings, Eco Tiffin continually educates itself on the latest construction technologies and materials. Robert and Emily Tiffin have obtained diplomas for retrofitting in the refurbishment of buildings, with Robert also becoming a certified thermographer. This expertise helps in identifying defects and heat loss in structures, ensuring we provide the best advice and services, including assistance with building insurance claims.
Incorporated as Eco Tiffin Limited in 2010, Robert’s passion for eco-friendly building practices led to this transformation. As environmental awareness grows, Eco Tiffin implements sound ecological principles, ensuring energy efficiency and sustainable housing. Our commitment to eco-friendly building is reinforced through continual CPD education for our staff and the use of innovative products.
Introducing Robert Tiffin…
Robert Tiffin is a director of Eco Tiffin, the experts in eco-friendly building-solutions. He started his career in the industry over 45 years ago as a quantity surveyor, working for large national companies such as McAlpine and Try Group developing his knowledge on domestic housing projects, health centres and hospitals. He then had a period working on modular buildings before joining the family business.
He has been on the London Board of the Federation of Master Builders for a number of years and is currently vice president. An influential figure in the building world, Robert was part of the expert working group set up by the Bonfield Review for the research into Retrofit Standards in 2017. In 2018 and 2019 he was invited to join the panel of experts on the Exhibition show Grand Designs. In 2020 he was asked to join other industry experts for a Q&A consultation to the Government All Party Environmental Select Committee for oral evidence focusing on energy efficiency. He has a particularly keen interest and expertise in defect repair and modernisation of pre-1990 historic and listed buildings. His focus on this specialist area is timely, as there is high demand, and his qualifications as a retrofit coordinator and thermographer are key. Eco Tiffin is a Which? Trusted Trader-approved member in partnership with Hertfordshire Trading Standards and an active member of the FMB and, therefore, Trust Mark-approved.
By continuously broadening his knowledge, Robert can advise his clients’ most effectively. His expertise, down to earth and practical approach allows him to find the ideal solutions to any building problem. Staying at the front of what are the latest developments in materials, technology and keeping up to date with the new legislation is critical.
